2005 to be a big year for Atlantic hurricanes
May 17, 2005 18: 18 EST
For weeks, we’ve seen hurricane-force winds whip the summit of Everest. Yesterday, NOAA hurricane forecasters predicted an above-normal hurricane season in the Atlantic. They expect 12-15 tropical storms, with 7 to 9 becoming hurricanes.
Several teams making summer Atlantic crossings
Hurricane season officially begins on June 1st and ends on November 30th. This year, Exweb has been covering several rowing teams that will be in the Atlantic during that period. Oliver Hicks and the Ocean Fours team are planning on leaving in late May, while the Vivaldi Atlantic Four team is aiming for a June departure date. However, the hurricane season generally doesn’t peak until late August.
According to the NOAA, in contrast to the Atlantic, a below-normal hurricane season is expected in the Eastern and Central Pacific. NOAA's outlook for the Eastern Pacific hurricane season, calls for 11-15 tropical storms, with six to eight becoming hurricanes of which two to four may become major hurricanes. Two or three tropical cyclones are projected for the Central Pacific.
An old hurricane rhyme goes: June, too soon; July, stand by; August, it must; October, all over; November, remember.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) uses a suite of sophisticated numerical models and high-tech tools to forecast tropical storms and hurricanes. Since 1995, all but two hurricane seasons have been classified as “above-normal.”
