Alex shipwrecked!
image story

Nov 12, 2004 10: 21 EST

Alex activated his EPIRB today, the boat has been lost on the rocks of Formentera (near Ibiza). Alex is currently in a hospital for check up:

"I was pushed to coast of Formentera by wind. I had big winds and big waves all night, I was looking for beaches but never saw any, only rocks. I kept rowing all night till 11.00am this morning, but I headed for rocks and nothing I could do. I activated the EPIRB.

Up until this morning I was enjoying myself, I passed the Gulf of Lion off France, this is where I would have expected a problem, I never expected it to end like this."

26 year old free-lance photographer Italian Alex Bellini was rowing in the Mediterranean Sea - the first Italian rower to attempt to cross an ocean, rowing 4500 n/miles from Genoa (Italy) to Cayenne (French Guyana) solo and no-stop.

Not very experienced, Alex "learned that human resources can bring people further than objective ability does."

He has taken part at Camel Trophy national selection, run the NYC Marathon in 3h 20 min, and the 150 miles Sahara Marathon Des Sables in 39 hours. At the Alaska Ultrasport Extreme (370 miles), he was the only Italian racer at the finish line after 9 days. Last year, he followed up with Alaska Ultra Sport Impossible (850 miles) in 27 days at a 3rd place.

Alex left Genoa October 21, and was shipwrecked November 12.
