A no-limit dive for a special lady
15:38 p.m. EDT Aug 12, 2003
A few days ago Tanya Streeter broke the record for both the men's and women's Freediving in the Variable Weight category. She descended to 122m/400feet in a dive time of 3 minutes 38 seconds.
Another woman, Audrey Mestre, 28, died Oct. 12 last year in a "no-limits" dive with a target depth of 561 feet (168.3 meters). She was trying to break the world record of 531.5 feet (159.5 meters), set by her famous husband, Francisco "Pipin" Ferreras in January 2000.
The couple had 7 wonderful years together and appeared in the Imax movie "Oceanmen" (Simons Imax, Boston). Their relationship was one of those rare matches of adventure mates living their life together at 100%. When Audrey died, Pipin was lost. As his tribute to her, on Aug 11, 2003 Pipin will attempt to break the No-limit world record on what should have been Audrey's Birthday. In his letter of reflection, he writes:
..."To continue with our goals, with our projects, to solidify the philosophy of the IAFD, to make our dreams come true, to impulse new talents that challenge the abyss, to attempt surpassing the –200 meters barrier… these were the persistent missions that characterized our relationship…now more than ever I feel the obligation, for her, to make these missions a reality."
