Another loop on an endless ocean
15:20 p.m. EDT Sep 28, 2003
Yesterday, the sky turned increasingly black and rough sea tumbled the boat in all directions. In addition, Maud seems to have entered another of those hopeless loops so close to, but so far away from home. The position chart showed a south/west/west position in the past few days. Maud needs north/east to go home.
Only 319 miles remain of the by now 100+ days trip, but this last stretch has turned very elusive. In good conditions Maud could easily cover this distance in only a few days. Instead, she just keeps circling as October nears the North Atlantic coast with its infamous fall storms.
Looking at the chart, the GPS and the calendar, Maud calculates her position over and over hoping and dreaming that she may reach the French coast before the autumn blizzards.
Maud has washed herself in the cold water trying to forget her ailing back which hurts worse with every passing day. She attentively observes the direction of the wind and the movement of the waves preparing to get going as soon as the conditions improve.
Captain Phil from the Amazon Queen in Colombia made a new picture for us all to watch while we wait with Maud.
French rower Maud Fontenoy set out from St. Pierre et Miquelon, Canada on June 13 in an attempt to become the first woman to row across the Atlantic West to East.
