Too much ice for Henk
03:56 a.m. EDT Jul 31, 2003
A report has arrived on Dutch circumnavigator Henk de Veldes progress:
In order to sail the Russian waters in the Arctic Sea, Henk had to obtain a Visa and in late June the eagerly awaited documents arrived.
Then, before heading out, he had to cross the infamous Bering Strait. Fortunately the strait was on its best behavior this time and Henk could sit back and watch the Russian coast rush towards him.
The next step is to take the Arctic route back to Europe. Henk has not yet left port however. Despite a mild winter there is still much ice in the waters between Wrangel Island and the Chukotka mainland. The departure will have to be put off until the waters have cleared. While waiting, Henk enjoys the hospitality of the Russians.
Dutchman Henk de Velde has been roaming the world's oceans for two years now on his boat The Campina.
Upon departing in 2001 Henk set his goal to sail along the North East Passage above and along Siberia; the Pacific from North to South; make it around Cape Horn and then back home to the Netherlands via Antarcticas coast. That didn't happen due to paper work politics and other obstacles; hence Henk had to alter his route. He has been home to the Netherlands a few times since, but now continues on another leg of the journey.
Henk has sailed around the world several times. The first trip lasted between 1978 and 1985 so Henk takes his time when out exploring. Why he does this? Says Henk: "To experience new things and enjoy life to the fullest".
