Atlantic Rowing Regatta 2004
12:46 p.m. EST Feb 9, 2004
The Atlantic Rowing Regatta from San Sebastian, La Gomera to Port St Charles, Barbados started off and running on January 20th. This year's regatta is organized by the Ocean Rowing Society and features thirteen official competitors – six solo rowers, six two-man teams and one four-man team.

The Queensland (four-man) team aims to set a record for the first four to complete the course and is attempting to break the speed record currently held by a 10-man crew who rowed across in 35 days. They reached the half-way point on February 7th – 18 days after the start.

One team pulled out of the race on Februrary 5th after rowing 500 miles into the 2900 mile course. The two-man "Kenneth C" team decided not to continue due to illness.

Among the twelve remaining competitors is Pavel Rezvoy, age 65, who is making the attempt solo. Pavel is Teddy Rezvoy’s father, who successfully rowed the Atlantic from East to West in 2001. Last summer, on Teddy's attempt at a return solo row from West to East, his boat was confiscated by the U.S. Navy shortly after departing from New York.

This year’s regatta commemorates three milestones events in ocean rowing: The 35th anniversary of the first East to West solo ocean row by John Fairfax and first West to East solo ocean row by Tom McClean as well as the 33rd anniversary of the first East to West double rorw by Geoff and Don Allum.
