Emergency water maker out for Maud
16:17 p.m. EDT Sep 19, 2003
There was good news and terrible news for Maud yesterday: The good news was that Maud made around 100 km distance towards the coast, and even north towards France! With around 550 km to go, this thriller got a decent push to a closure yesterday.
A storm has showed up on the weather maps, close to Maud. That is a mixed blessing. Maud dreads another storm badly, but it could help to push her towards land. And she needs all the help she can get at this point.
For the bad news - the unthinkable happened yesterday -as Maud's second and last water maker finally gave out. Ever since Wednesday evening she has not been able to produce any more water. She is now left with about eight liters and was advised by Alain Bombard to replace a third of her daily consumption with sea water.
The following solutions remain:
1. Pray that the electronic water maker that worked for half an hour the other day begins to work again. It would be enough if it worked even sporadically. A problem with that is that the sky is cloudy and the batteries can't be recharged.
2. To get close enough to another boat and ask them for fresh water.
3. Hope for rainfall.
Her stored eight liters won't take Maud far as all the food is freeze dried and requires water for preparation. Last night was a long one for Maud with all the new problems emerging. She fights not to give in to depression and despair. She is very close now, but also at her end with just about everything.
French rower Maud Fontenoy set out from St. Pierre et Miquelon, Canada on June 13 in an attempt to become the first woman to row across the Atlantic West to East.
