First Complete Full Descent of Nile River
image story

Apr 28, 2004 16: 11 EST
Everest climber Pasquale "PV" Scaturro, 50, from Colorado, completed his dream mission today: To descent the Nile river in an inflatable. Together with Gordon Brown of California he made the first complete descent of the Nile river from its source in Ethiopia to the shores of Alexandria and Mediterranean Sea. They reached the mouth of the Nile today, April 28, 114 days after launching their 3,250-mile journey.

Scaturro was leading Erik Weihenmayer's 2001 Everest expedition. Michael Browns movie about this expedition "Farther than the Eye can see" was recently nominated for an Emmy award. On the team were also Louis Benitez (on Everest right now leading for Adventure Consultants), Bradford and Sherman Bull (father & son!), Jeff Evans, and other well known climbers.

Accompanying PV on the Nile was Gordon Brown, an expert kayaker and adventure filmmaker. For four months, the two and their local support crews traveled the river in two sixteen-foot inflatable rafts and a kayak, all the while filming their experiences with an IMAX camera and two digital video-cams.

"The Nile is the most magnificent river in the world," said Scaturro. "It has rapids, waterfalls, jungle, canyons, deserts, hippos, crocs, long flat beautiful sections, huge beautiful sandbars. There is no other river in the world that can compare.

MacGillivray Freeman Films and Orbita Max of Spain, are co-producing a documentary based on the expedition, "Mystery of the Nile," for release in IMAX® theaters in February 2005.
