Agu 23, 2004 18: 52 EST
This just up on the OceanRowing Society:
"Today, August 23, 2004 at 06:10GMT both EPIRB and Argos beacon onboard “Mrs D’s Viking Spirit” were activated. Coast Guard in Juneau Alaska have requested that German ship ‘Hanjin Philadelphia’ go to the assistance of Mick Dawson. Rendezvous is expected at approx 14:00GMT.
12.08GMT
Lt Asheley Bodkin Duty officer at US Coastguard Juneau Alaska said: "Right now we have a HC 130 flying over Mr. Dawson, he has no communications, the C 130 dropped him a VHF radio but he could not reach it. The "Hanjin Philidelphia" is expected on scene.
13:42GMT I spoke to Lt Asheley Bodkin, but she said "Nothing new to report"
Last entry: "Mick is saved."
One of the rowers out there, Golden Gate rower Mick Dawson, has been at sea the longest; about 2 and a half months. He was making steady progress but had only just crossed the halfway point (end July). Mick left Choshi, Japan at 02:10 GMT May 6th 2004 in his second attempt to reach Golden Gate bridge in San Francisco, CA, USA.
His sat phone stopped working and his home team didn't hear from him in a month. Until a week ago: The message from Mick was delivered through a skipper named Shakhid from a passing Bangladeshi vessel.
Mick basically said "hi," that he's still out there, and has company of dolphins and whales: ‘See you in San Francisco the first weeks of October!’ were his parting words to Captain Shakhid to be passed on to friends and family.
