Hurricane Alex: Ocean rowers abandon ship, adrift in life raft!
Agu 8, 2004 01: 25 EST
This just up at the Ocean Rowing Society:
"Pink Lady:
Today (August 8 2004) at around 2.45 AM, the four British rowers attempting the fastest crossing from St John’s, Newfoundland to Falmouth, Cornwall alerted the Falmouth Coastguard to the need for a rescue from their position at sea about 370 miles west of Bishop’s Rock Lighthouse.
The distress beacon on the Pink Lady boat was activated and in turn Falmouth Coastguard scrambled a Nimrod. The boys are currently in a life raft as the boat has split in two in heavy seas. We now await further information about their rescue."
Anne is OK: Alex his no more a hurricane and wind was 30 to 35 knots when it passed to Anne's North. According to Anne the sea is very confused," capsisable state" but the wind is decreasing.
Emmanuel Coindre: Announcing the semi-course of my crossing, but also the passage of the tropical storm "Alex" obliging me to put itself under drift anchor and carriage since the beginning of afternoon. With 40-45 nodes of wind, locked up in the boat... waves enormous, monstrous, uncontrolled wild surfing...
The strong gale arrived very quickly... 40, 45 nodes of South/East. I made monstrous surfings, and I capsized twice.
4 oceanrowing boats are currently battling a fierce North Atlantic storm.
