Maud jumps into the cold water
10:10 a.m. EDT Sep 17, 2003
Maud had hoped for a change in the winds but they are still blowing the wrong way and the backwards drift continues. She looks at the small manual water maker and wonders how long it will be able to hold together. Maud can't stop worrying about the water situation and decides to do something about it.
The many barnacles stuck on the hull of the boat might be what is keeping the water maker from functioning. She tries to scrape them off using a long stick, but without success. They are stuck so hard and the lower part of the boat can't be reached. Maud comes to the conclusion that she will have to jump into the water to get rid of them. Something that is easier said than done. The water is cold, the sharks are not far off and there is always the risk of not being able to get back to the boat.
But if there is a chance of solving the water problem there really isn't much choice. So Maud dives into the water. She quickly removes the barnacles stuck at the entrance of the water maker. Trembling of cold she gets out from the water. She checks the water maker; "Let's be positive, it is a little better, a 1/2 liter of water collects and then nothing..we will see what happens tomorrow", Maud says.
French rower Maud Fontenoy set out from St. Pierre et Miquelon, Canada on June 13 in an attempt to become the first woman to row across the Atlantic West to East.
