No go for Pipin
11:59 a.m. EDT Aug 14, 2003
Earlier this summer diver Francisco "Pipin" Ferreras announced his plans to match his wife Audrey Mestre's world record of 561 feet (168.3 meters) August 11, on what should have been her birthday.
The dive was to be made in her honor as Audrey lost her life in her record attempt. But that day came and went without a dive attempt. Writes the editor on Pipins website:
"Pipin’s dive has been announced in multiple times with multiple different dates (what’s new?). However, the most current and up-to-date information we can provide today - August 12, 2003 – is that Pipin will attempt to “match” (not break) Audrey’s absolute world record of 170 meters. The date? October 12, 2003. That will be exactly one year after Audrey’s passing. The dive will be in her honor; there is no other way!"
In the meantime, it is announced that the life of Pipin and Audrey's life is to be featured on film. As things stand at the moment the movie will be directed by James Cameron, of Titanic fame and perhaps starring Salma Hayek as Audrey. Shooting is to begin in 2004 with a possible release in 2005.
This movie revelation has caused quite a stir. Many say that this movie is to be all about the life of Pipin. In the forum section of Pipin's website Carlo Serra tries to clarify; "Pipin’s athletic life deserves a movie, no question about it. However, let's not forget the reason why this movie deal is happening...it took Audrey’s life to get here!".
Details on upcoming projects fill follow as they come in. But for now we can look forward to the proposed dive attempt in October.
Audrey Mestre, 28, died Oct. 12 last year in a "no-limits" dive with a target depth of 561 feet (168.3 meters). She was trying to break the world record of 531.5 feet (159.5 meters), set by her famous husband, Francisco "Pipin" Ferreras in January 2000.
