Ocean Gods Wrapping a Birthday gift for Maud
15:59 p.m. EDT Sep 3, 2003
Let' see, um, watermakers...
Maud is giving her all at the oars right now to turn the boat back towards France. But despite her dedication, the results are not promising. She is still drifting in a backward loop south.
Deprived of sleep, injured, her boat shattered from the recent storm, little water left and the water maker dead since five days back - to make matters worse Maud is currently on a cargo ship route increasing the risk of being run down by a larger vessel. Last night the echo radar sounded off alerting her of a ship coming dangerously close.
To sleep in such conditions is extremely difficult. Right now Maud would do anything to leave this zone, but the wind and drift are against her.
On Sunday, September 7 it will be her 26th birthday. "By the way, don't tire yourselves preparing any birthday cakes as they will no doubt run bad by the time I arrive", she remarks.
But perhaps the Ocean God will offer a gift of his own. Maud's negative drift whas somewhat slower yesterday. She is currently caught between two opposite wave/wind systems, this probably giving her choppy waters.
The weather charts however point to a change in winds and drift around the time of Maud's birthday. With some luck, just as things seem most desperate - a wind of change is coming to Maud's rescue, pushing her to victory and home.
French rower Maud Fontenoy set out from St. Pierre et Miquelon, Canada on June 13 in an attempt to become the first woman to row across the Atlantic West to East.
