Ocean Rowers Update: Bad Weather From Pakistan to New York
Jul 16, 2004 13: 07 EST
Four out of the six rowers scheduled to cross an ocean this summer are out at sea and experiencing head winds, choppy waters and big swells. The Frenchman, Jean Lukes was picked up July 11, aborting his fourth attempt to cross the Atlantic. Andreas rommel is still on standby due to the past few days of rain on the Eastern Seaboard.
Anne Quemere
She is still blocked by the easterly wind and using the floating anchor, the Sardine lost 50 miles in 48 Hrs. “It’s horrible, very difficult to live with, a major let-down as well as a hard lesson. The weather is atrocious, barely 9 C, I am cold all over…” Ann is questioning herself but is not ready to give up. “The wind has abated. Will it turn the way I want? I need it to boost up my confidence and to hang on…I hope to be able to give you really good news tomorrow.” 42 days at sea.
Pink Lady
Mark with the Pink Lady four man crew says that despite today being the first really sunny one since they left St John's, with blue skies and fluffy clouds they have taken a real battering with waves breaking over the port side of Pink Lady. The crew have tried to improve the situation by pumping sea water into the ballast bags on one side of the boat.
The crew broke their normal routine of rowing two hours on and then taking two off by switching to a one hour turnaround. Early on in the day this kept fairly fresh arms at the oars but has exhausted them. The crew intend to revert to their normal shift system about now. Despite such an expenditure of effort the boat has only been creeping eastward at 1.2 to 1.4 knots at times. 15 days at sea.
Mick Dawson
He has been spotted by another German ship, who again contacted Micks parents and said they had spotted the 'Mad Englishmen'. Joyce Dawson was contacted at 4am Sunday 11th by the skipper who said Mick is well, comms still down and there may be a chance he could pick up a signal later on in the trip. He is in high spirits and rowing well. A couple more days and the half way point will be passed. 70 days at sea.
Emmanuel Coindre has not dispatched since his departure from Stage Harbour, Chatham on July 9th. 6 days at sea.
Andreas Rommel is still on standby in Chatham.
