Oldest Rower near flood ravaged Haiti
image story

May 26, 2004 17: 31 EST
65 year old Pavel Rezvoy is cutting it close to the shores of Hispaniola where flooding has taken its toll. The weather has cleared recently and while Pavel continues his row, the Caribbean begins the cleanup.

"The whole day long the weather was just splendid. I am fighting the wind and I am the winner. Beware of this South wind, I should not let it carry me away to the North: in front of me there is the southern cape of Haiti - Cabo Beata.

God save me from getting close to them! - there is not a single port left, nor a landing-pier over there. That's why I have to fight. My spirits are high.

Having a telephone has completely changed my life, to compare it to the life I had on the Atlantic. Then I was like a thing inside itself, and now I am getting messages and can communicate - so much better!"

Many days of torrential rain, which had completely tired Pavel out, were followed by flooding on the island of Hispaniola, shared by Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Floods and mudslides have killed more than 600 people, more than 200 people are believed to be missing, thousands have been left homeless in the two countries.

At 65 years old, Pavel Rezvoy, a geologist from Ukraine, is the oldest ocean rower in the history of ocean rowing. When he, after 62 days, crossed the finish line in Barbados, he arrived as number two of the solo class in ORSARR 2004, only 2,5 days after the 23 years old winner.

But then grandpa refused to go home: -"There is nothing to do in Ukraine for senior citizens", he said. So Pavel Rezvoy headed to Cuba, May 14th, at 14:00GMT.

This is going to be a tough row, but he is absolutely looking forward to it, saying, that he still has a really big Dorada to fish! And this time he has ALL the fishing tackle ready for the adventure. He also has a new rudder.

"I have caught insuperable desire to set out on the ocean – until now, five sixths of the globe has been unknown to me. It's time. It's time to set sail (oars) … while I still can."
