image story

May 31, 2005 01: 34 EST
Jail time couldn't stop him. Ollie is out there rowing his boat - and - for the first time - we have live pics too! Ollie is using Contact 3.0 and now we'll get to follow an ocean row images and all.

Here's the skippers latest:

30 May, 05 - 17:26 4009.9130N,07203.071W,00M
DAY 4

"Again hot slow progress, hope will be able to get off the continental shelf by tomorrow morning. Row, row, row your boat.

Saw 3 porpoises or whales at lunchtime - hopefuully porpoise as they are good luck. (Check Ollies websote for the image).

Stan has got rather sunburnt today as he lives on deck, the penguin coming from cooler climes prefers to stay in the cabin. For those who have not met them, Stan
is my spade and the penguin is the 14th member of the black and white club - he loves to travel.

Until tomorrow"

Frank Samuelson and George Harbo, two Norwegian immigrants and fishermen, rowed with an eighteen foot skiff ‘The Fox” in 55 days from New York to the Scilly Islands. The ocean rowing pioneers ended their trip in Le Havre. They hoped to cash in on the lucrative lecture tour circuit and make their fortunes. But they ended up with two medals and had to return to fishing. George Harbo died in 1908 and Frank Samuelson in 1946. Their record of 55 days has yet to be broken for that particular route.

Oliver Hicks departed on May 27 2005 at 14:30GMT to row the Atlantic W-E, from Atlantic Highlands NJ, intending to reach England in 62 days or less, thereby breaking the USA-Europe solo Atlantic record. Oliver will become the youngest rower (23) to attempt the 3,000-mile crossing. His departure scheduled for May 23 2005.

Previously, Oliver Hicks has competed in the Marathon des Sables and the world’s longest kayak race, the Yukon River Quest. He first developed an interest in ocean rowing at age 16. Hicks will use an Atlantic challenge class rowing boat to (24.3 ft long).
