Roslin: No wonder I don't eat; I'm too scared
image story

Oct 19, 2004 12: 18 EST
Roslin Forrest, 23, attempt to become the youngest woman to sail around the world single handed and non-stop is now ten days out, with a return in less than 10 months from her true departure date of October 9, 2004.

Sow how is life on board? Here's the latest:

Noon Oct 18th: N 39 deg 33' W 128 deg 34'

"...realized I forgot a frying pan!"

Felt a little queezy and feverish yesterday. Slept most of the morning trying to keep warm. Lack of food I think is the reason. Since the breeze picked up yesterday afternoon I slept and ate on the salon floor to help feel a little more still.

I realized I forgot a frying pan!! All I know how to cook is stirfry!! Guess I will have to expand my chief skills. Been very turned off anything with sugar, with all this prepackaged food its hard to find something that turns me on; eggs and 2 minute noodles are on special at the moment. Craving greasy foods like cheese and lasagna.

"Have two old handles somewhere, just need to find them"

My weather man, Peter O'Donnell, is forecasting gale(or was it storm?)force winds. Have been using mini winches by hand so far. Went to put handle in them, as I was heading into 30 knots, to find my two new main winch handles don't fit!!! I broke one of the spring release clips on one of them trying to make it go as I couldn't bear listening to the flogging. Sheets aren't long enough to reach windward side winch. Have two old handles somewhere, just need to find them! As with many things!

"I'm afraid of heights"

Been a bit rolly polly and rough. There is always a small amount of water in the bilge. We have been pushed over a few times now enough so that the water spills out onto the galley floor. MMMM, tasty bilge water for brekky!

Couple days ago I discovered yet another chafed halyard. This time the more important staysail halyard. Climbed up the mast to have look. (Bet you didn't think I'm afraid of heights!) Could only think it was chafing where it entered the mast. Got out old wire halyards and replaced the staysail. It worked!! If it hadn't I could have lost the halyard inside the mast! No wonder I don't eat; I'm too scared, too many things to fix!

"I got the center board to move!!!!!!!!

"I got the center board to move!!!!!!!! I tied down the SS tube so, as I pulled the wire up, the tube stayed connected at the bottom to the center board trunk. Thank goodness for that! I think it helps. She lays over but keeps her course when waves pass by. I had already tried three reefs with the little staysail up. Helped a little but my boom is so long and my stay sail so small. Might take off 120% furling genoa and replace with a smaller yankee; very happy as the weather helm was eating at me.

Daniel Steel

I'm off to put in a third reef so I can take a nap. May try and do a couple turns on the furling drum so I can furl it in all the way before the gale comes, and look for the winch handles!

Books, mostly are all non fiction sailing, But the only one I have picked up so far is a Daniel Steel. Not reading much as I'm always busy. I'm sure it was noted there were still things to be done when I left the dock some 10 days ago! Trimming the sails is a major time consumer. As I have never really sailed her there is lots to learn and practice."

Roslin Forrest, 23, is attempting to become the youngest woman to sail around the world single handed and non-stop. From Vancouver she sails south until Chile’s Cape Horn. Heading east in the Southern Ocean all the way to New Zealand’s Southwest Cape then heading north in the Pacific again and home to Vancouver.

She will pass all five capes and pass through all necessary meridians as set out by the World Speed Sailing Record Counsel. Based on a conservative 100nm/day, she estimates a return in less than 10 months from her true departure date of October 9, 2004.

Some records in the realm of round-the-world sailing are; Ellen MacArthur, British, 24yrs 7 months, youngest woman to sail around the world solo, non-stop and unassisted. 3 months to finish. Jesse Martin, Australian, 18 yr., youngest male to sail solo, unassisted, non-stop around the world. Kay Cotte, New Zealand woman, first to sail solo, unassisted, and non-stop. Jon Sanders, Australian, first to ever sail three times around, unassisted, non-stop.
