The Grey Wolf vs. the Young Gun
12:59 p.m. EST Mar 1, 2004
The oldest among the six solo rowers in the Atlantic Rowing Regatta 2004 is 65 year old Pavel Rezvoy and incredibly enough he is also in the lead on his Marion Lviv.
But it's a tight race between him and the second runner up, Sam Knight, on Pacific Pete. Now get this: At 23 years of age at the race start Sam will be the youngest to complete a solo ocean row!
There you go - the oldest vs. the youngest in a close battle. And close it is: There are only 30 miles between the boats right now, less than a half days worth of rowing!
Sam has worked as a marine biologist and hopes to move into a career in fisheries management. Pavel Rezvoy is a geologist and dad to Teddy Rezvoy, who has previously rowed the Atlantic from East to West in 2001 and set out to row solo in the reverse direction last summer, before he had an unwanted visit from the U.S. Navy.
Latest position, the grey wolf: 1119miles from goal
Latest position, the young gun: 1154miles from goal
Ocean Rowing Society Atlantic Rowing Regatta ORSARR 2004 takes place to celebrate the 35th anniversaries of the first East-West solo ocean row by John Fairfax and first West-East solo ocean row by Tom McClean; and 33rd anniversary of the first Atlantic East-West double row by Geoff and Don Allum.
