Twins take on Indian Ocean crossing
image story

Apr 29, 2005 17: 24 EST
Exweb ran several articles on upcoming Atlantic Ocean crossings. Now it’s time to turn our focus southwards. On April 22nd, twin brothers, Sergey and Alexander Sinelnik, set out from Carnarvon, Western Australia, on a rarely-attempted expedition: Crossing the Indian Ocean, east to west. So far, so good. They’ve covered 267 miles in the eight days since their start.

Mainland to mainland

According to the Ocean Rowing Society, the last completed Indian Ocean row took place in 2003. Simon Chalk rowed “True Spirit” from Kalbarri, Western Australia, to the longitude of Rafael Island (off the east coast of Madagascar). Chalk’s journey lasted a total of 4027 miles. The Sinelnik brothers plan to travel considerably farther; their route takes them all the way to mainland Africa.

Of course, they won’t be making any stops at any of the ports-of-call along the way. The brothers still have 4849 miles to go before reaching their final destination, Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania.

The twin-brothers, who have covered 80,000 km around the world (5 continents) on their motorcycles, are attempting to row the Indian ocean from Australia to Africa (Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania) in their boat "Rus", ancient for 'Russia' (formerly "Linda").
