Woman to row both ways across Atlantic
image story

Jun 2, 2004 16: 39 EST
Last year Anne Quemere broke a major record in ocean rowing. In 56 days she made a solo, unassisted crossing of the Atlantic Ocean, beating the previous women’s record by 25 days. Way to go Anne! But wait, she’s not finished yet.

This June Anne plans to row in the opposite direction, West to East, to become the first woman to row both directions solo and unassisted. She hasn’t publicized the journey much but our friends at the Ocean Rowing Society leaked the details. On Anne’s website she remarks, “At first my relationship with the media was not a priority. I was convinced that my adventure was my business only”.

The challenge will take Anne 2700 nautical miles, from Chathan, Cape Cod (USA) to Brittany (France), her native land. She hopes to make it in less than 90 days.
Anne was Born in Quimper (Brittany) 37 years ago. In her mind one image remained stronger than any other: the image of the ocean. To her one of the most beautiful experiences in the world is the that of a crossing. Four years ago she decided to row solo across the Atlantic Ocean. With determination and step-by-step planning, she brought together the pieces and the adventure took shape. On December 2002, she rowed out into the open sea, leaving from Canary Islands and arriving in Guadeloupe 56 days later solo and without assistance, breaking the women’s record previously held by Tori Murden who made the crossing in 81 days. The first woman to row from West to East was Maud Fontenoy, who made it in 117 days this past October.

Anne Quemere plans to row Atlantic W-E from Chatham (USA) to Brittany (France) in her new rowboat "Le Connetable" to become the first woman to row an ocean in both directions solo. Departure is scheduled for June 2004.
