Young gun overtakes grey wolf close to finish line
13:55 p.m. EST Mar 18, 2004

At 65 years old, Pavel Rezvoy (Marion Lviv) is the oldest among the six solo rowers in the Atlantic Rowing Regatta 2004. Incredibly enough it's a tight race between him and the youngest, Sam Knight 23, (Pacific Pete) for the winning position.

It's 125 miles between the two right now. Over the total distance of 2907 miles, two days of rowing separate them at this point.

Pavel might have hit an unfavorable current, dropping his average of 60 miles daily, down to 52-54 miles in the past 4 days. For two days before that, he only did 20 and 27, practically at a stand still. That must have been extremely frustrating for him, as he had been leading up to that point. He averaged 52 yesterday, with 227 miles to the finish.

Sam instead averaged 68 yesterday, and have only 102 miles to go. With this speed, it seems that the young gun will beat the grey wolf to Barbados Saturday or Sunday.

Sam has worked as a marine biologist and hopes to move into a career in fisheries management. Pavel Rezvoy is a geologist and dad to Teddy Rezvoy, who has previously rowed the Atlantic from East to West in 2001 and set out to row solo in the reverse direction last summer, before he had an unwanted visit from the U.S. Navy.

Ocean Rowing Society Atlantic Rowing Regatta ORSARR 2004 takes place to celebrate the 35th anniversaries of the first East-West solo ocean row by John Fairfax and first West-East solo ocean row by Tom McClean; and 33rd anniversary of the first Atlantic East-West double row by Geoff and Don Allum.
