Afghanistan: Hannah in search of the source of the River Oxus
image story

Agu 4, 2004 19: 04 EST
It’s the beginning of what will be an Adventure tri-fecta. Hannah McKeand will first go to Afghanistan this month to travel up the Wakan Corridor into the Hindu Kush in search of the source of the River Oxus.

Then this fall/winter she’ll be skiing to the South Pole. After that she plans on doing an around the world yacht race. Hannah has just arrived in Kabul, Afghanistan only a day or two ago, “The skies above Kabul were full of America helicopters, but the thing I watched as we came in to land over the brown fields was a tiny tornado tearing unminded over the dry ground and lifting the dust into the sky. Kabul is spectacularly placed, being surrounded on three sides by mountains and on the third by desert plains. The city itself is less devastated by its recent history than I had expected…”

The group is made up of an eclectic bunch with a rather large age spread. One of their guides is 25 years old, one of the women likes to smoke cigarettes from one of those black cigarette holder (watch some old movies if you can’t picture it), and there’s even a bloke who’s 81. Should be a real adventure.

The team is currently staying at the Kabul Lodge, “It's green and geranium filled garden is peopled by an eclectic mixture of aid workers, industrial developers and journalists. They welcome us amiably into their quiet circles, and hail us specifically and respectfully as the first ambassadors of Afghanistan's new touristic age.”

Hannah is using the Contact 3.0 dispatching system; so get ready to follow along on her journey. It’s going to be a rare treat to see, hear, and read about Afghanistan from a non-journalist/non-military view that has made up a staggering majority of what we know about the country.

After Afghanistan, Hannah will go for the South Pole this fall, and will then finish up the trifecta by hopefully competing in an around the world sailing race.
