Youngest woman to sail round world
16:09 p.m. EST Apr 19, 2004
Published March 19, 04

Roslin Forrest is attempting to become the youngest woman to sail around the world single handed and non-stop. Now 22 years of age, she is working everyday, twelve hours a day, on her Columbia 34’ sailboat christened 'Stargazer' preparing for the trip. Most 22 year olds are in their last years of undergraduate studies, wondering were they are going next. Roslin knows exactly where she is going and has ever since she was 13.

At age 13 Roslin took her first sailing lesson. She quickly learned the ropes and began passing each level with ease. She soon took up racing. School work eventually took precedent and put an end to her racing at age 17. After graduating high-school, Roslin got right back into sailing. “The past four years…have been a series of one amazing adventure after the next. Those adventures mostly took place sailing to exotic isolated Islands in the South Pacific, but also to Mexico, New Zealand and Australia. It was the beautifully timed sequence of my travels that ultimately lead me to where I am today. They are the reason I now have my own boat. And perhaps, why I will be leaving in September 2004, for a non-stop solo circumnavigation, and not in ten years time.”

Roslin’s journey is shaping up well, though she does have a lot of work to do yet and is suffering from limited funds. ExplorersWeb will be following Roslin this fall and into next year and we expect as much excitement and adventure as Maud Fontenoy’s west-east row across the Atlantic.

Some records in the realm of round-the-world sailing are; Ellen MacArthur, British, 24yrs 7 months, youngest woman to sail around the world solo, non-stop and unassisted. 3 months to finish. Jesse Martin, Australian, 18 yr., youngest male to sail solo, unassisted, non-stop around the world. Kay Cotte, New Zealand woman, first to sail solo, unassisted, and non-stop. Jon Sanders, Australian, first to ever sail three times around, unassisted, non-stop.

Roslin Forrest is attempting to become the youngest woman to sail around the world single handed and non-stop. From Vancouver she sails south until Chile’s Cape Horn. Heading east in the Southern Ocean all the way to New Zealand’s Southwest Cape then heading north in the Pacific again and home to Vancouver. She will pass all five capes and pass through all necessary meridians as set out by the World Speed Sailing Record Counsel. Based on a conservative 100nm/day, she will leave in late September 2004 and estimates a return in less than 10 months.
